By Her Side

from $250.00

By Her Side is a limited-edition, cloth-bound hardcover artist book by Dora Somosi that honors the lives and legacies of 25 pioneering American women—artists, writers, poets, ecologists, and thinkers—through the trees that bore witness to their creativity. Each of the 25 featured cyanotype plates, printed in Somosi’s signature deep blue, is accompanied by poetic reflections and research-based texts that trace the contours of memory, nature, and feminist lineage.

This 78-page volume, printed by Brilliant Graphics in Pennsylvania, serves as both a visual meditation and a lyrical reframing of photography’s role in recording memory. The project began at Edna St. Vincent Millay’s home, Steepletop, where Somosi first photographed the poet’s beloved grounds. From there, she traveled across the country, capturing trees that still stand beside the former homes and studios of women such as Emily Dickinson, Georgia O’Keeffe, Toni Morrison, Ruth Asawa, Agnes Martin, and Anni Albers.

Each signed and numbered book in this limited edition of 100 includes a hand-printed and signed 7.25” x 9.75" cyanotype print of the Dogwood tree in Somosi’s own backyard.
